Using a Blow Dryer to Add Volume

Begin by washing your hair with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner to remove any excess oil and build-up. Before you start blow drying, you’ll want to gently towel-dry your hair until it's slightly damp -  you don’t want to start with dripping wet hair. This will save you time and allow you to get right into styling. If your hair is too wet when you start styling, you’ll spend an unnecessary amount of time getting it dry.

Anytime you apply heat to your hair, you introduce the risk of damage. When hair is exposed to high temperatures, the natural moisture and essential proteins within the hair shaft can be depleted, leading to dryness, brittleness, and breakage over time. If you have a stubborn cowlick, you can help tame it by using the blow dryer to “train” your hair in the other direction. Using a brush and the nozzle attachment, brush hair in the opposite direction of the cowlick while also directing airflow that way. Alternate between training hair away from its natural growth pattern and then back toward it to end up with hair in a more neutral position. This may take a bit of effort, but should cut down on styling time with products.

If you have long hair, divide your hair into manageable sections for more precise styling. Start by lifting sections of your hair at the roots and pointing the blow dryer downwards along the shaft of the hair. Then use a brush to pull the hair upwards and away from the scalp to create volume.

When you are just about done working through each section, use the cool shot button on your blow dryer to set the style. Cool air helps to lock in the volume and prevent frizz.
